Iceland is the most expensive flying in this guide and the one with the strangest ground underneath it. Twenty minutes from the city the Reykjanes peninsula is a field of fissures and lava that has erupted repeatedly in recent years; an hour east are geothermal valleys where steam comes out of the hillsides, and glaciers beyond them. Almost every flight lands, usually on a crater rim or a geothermal ridge where nothing else can put you. Every flight compared below rates 4.4 or better.
Reykjanes has erupted many times since 2021, and listings understandably use photographs from those episodes. Between eruptions there is no glowing fissure to fly over — the same route shows steaming vents, fresh black lava and craters, which is still remarkable and still worth the fare, but it is not the picture. Check the current volcanic status before booking a premium volcano route, and treat any promise of active lava as marketing rather than a commitment.

Out to the Reykjanes volcanic area or the Hengill geothermal fields, with a landing on a crater rim or ridge.
A flight paired with an ATV ride on the lava fields, making a half day of it.
Fire-and-ice routes landing on both glacier and geothermal ground, highland flights to Landmannalaugar with three landings, and private charters over the volcanic peninsula.
One landing is the standard hour. Two takes you to a glacier as well as a geothermal field; three reaches the highlands. Each landing adds both time and fuel.
Reykjanes has erupted repeatedly since 2021 in episodes lasting days to months. When a fissure is active the flights are extraordinary; between episodes they show fresh lava fields and steam.
Wind, not cold, is the constraint. Iceland's weather changes hourly and flights are cancelled and rebooked frequently.
In December there are around four usable hours of light; in June there is no darkness at all. That changes what slots exist far more than temperature does.

Most flights leave from Reykjavik's domestic airport, a short walk or taxi from the centre.
This is one of the few destinations here where you can walk to the aircraft from a city hotel.Passengers weighed, and the day's route explained — in Iceland it is often adjusted for wind on the morning.
Ask what the volcanic area is doing right now; the answer changes month to month.South over the lava fields to Reykjanes, or east into the Hengill geothermal area, with steam vents and crater rows below.
The ground here reads as another planet from the air — dark lava, orange sulphur, green moss.On a crater rim, a ridge above a steaming valley, or on a glacier on the two-landing routes.
Landing sites are windy and exposed. Take a proper jacket even in July.An hour to three hours end to end depending on the route and the number of landings.
