Helicopter Tours in Kauai

Kauai is the island where the flight is not a luxury. No road crosses the interior, none reaches the Na Pali cliffs, and the wettest ground on the planet sits in the middle of it — Waiʻaleʻale, where the crater walls carry so many waterfalls at once that they have a nickname rather than names. A 50 to 60-minute circuit covers Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali coast, Hanalei Bay and Manawaiopuna Falls, and that is the standard product from Lihue. The flights compared below include doors-off and all-window-seat versions of that circuit.

The interior closes before the coast does

The Waiʻaleʻale crater is the leg people book Kauai for, and it is also the first thing the weather takes away. Trade-wind cloud fills it through the morning, and by early afternoon most flights fly a modified route without it — legally and safely, but not the route in the photographs that sold the flight. Nobody is being dishonest when that happens; the fix is to book the first departure of the day, and to keep a second morning free if the crater is the reason you are flying.

How Much Does a Kauai Helicopter Tour Cost?

Kauai fares are among the highest per seat on this site and among the lowest per minute: a $336 flight buys close to an hour in the air, where a New York flight of the same price buys fifteen minutes. What moves the price is the door configuration, the departure airfield and whether the aircraft is private.

Doors-off and all-window flights
$384 – $449

Harnessed with the doors removed, or a doors-on aircraft configured so nobody sits in a middle seat. The version photographers book.

North-shore departures
$539

Flights leaving from Princeville rather than Lihue, closer to the Na Pali coast and correspondingly more expensive per seat.

What affects the price?

Doors on or off

Doors-off flights cost more, ban loose items entirely, are colder and much louder, and are the only way to photograph the coast without reflections. They also have a minimum age on most operators.

Departure airfield

Lihue is the main airport on the east side and where most flights leave. Princeville on the north shore is closer to Na Pali and charges for it.

Seat configuration

Six-seat aircraft put two passengers in the middle. Operators selling 'all window seats' are flying four-seat machines or blocking the middle, which is what the surcharge buys.

Landing or not

Almost every Kauai tour is a flyover. Manawaiopuna Falls landings — the Jurassic Park waterfall — are sold separately and cost considerably more than the standard circuit.

Bottom line: Book the $336 shared circuit if you simply want to see the island properly; it covers the same route as the more expensive flights. Pay the extra for doors-off only if you are shooting seriously — the $48 gap on this page is smaller than the same upgrade costs on Maui or Oahu, and it removes the single thing that ruins helicopter photographs.

Doors On vs Doors Off on Kauai: Which Should You Book?

Both fly the same island circuit. The difference is what sits between you and the view, and it costs less here than on the other islands. Fares are from the flights on this page.

Doors on, sharedDoors offPrivate, all window seats
Typical Kauai fare $336 – $369$384 – $425$384 and up
Photographs Reflections in every frame unless you press the lens to the glassNothing between the lens and the coastClean, if you have an outer seat
Comfort Warm, conversational, headsets audibleCold and very loud; a jacket is not optionalSame as doors on
What you can bring Normal camera and phoneTethered items only — no hats, no loose lens capsNormal camera and phone
Best for Most visitors, families, first flightsPhotographers and anyone who filmsCouples and small groups who want a guaranteed window
The Kauai anomaly: the doors-off upgrade here is roughly $50, where the same upgrade on Maui or Oahu often costs $100 or more. If you were ever going to fly with the doors off, this is the island to do it on.

Month-by-Month Guide

January

Wettest stretch of the year: every waterfall runs, and the interior closes more often.

February

Still wet, with the crater spectacular on the days it opens.

March

Rain eases; a good balance of full waterfalls and clearer coastal air.

April

The dry season begins with the falls still running — the best combination of the year.

May

Clear, stable and reliably flyable, before the summer crowds.

June

Dry and clear on the coast; some interior waterfalls thin out.

July

Peak visitor month; book flights days ahead rather than on the morning.

August

Driest interior of the year and the least dramatic waterfalls.

September

Quiet, clear and warm — the locals' month to fly.

October

Rain returns gradually; the falls refill and the coast stays clear.

November

Wetter and cloudier, with strong waterfall displays between systems.

December

Rain and holiday demand together; morning slots sell out early.

What to Expect on the Day

1

Check in at Lihue

Tour terminals sit beside the main airport. Check-in is 45 to 60 minutes before the slot, and includes the weigh-in and a video safety briefing.

Kauai operators are strict about the briefing video — arriving late usually means losing the slot rather than a shortened flight.
2

Weigh-in and seating

Weights build the load sheet and the seating chart. Front seats beside the pilot are assigned, not sold, unless you book an all-window or private flight.

Say at check-in if you are travelling as a pair; seat swaps are far easier to arrange there than at the aircraft.
3

Briefing and boarding

Life vests, door handles, and the approach path to the aircraft. Doors-off flights add a harness fitting and a loose-item check.

On doors-off flights everything must be tethered or left behind, including hats, lens caps and unstrapped phones.
4

The circuit

West over Waimea Canyon, north along the Na Pali cliffs, across Hanalei Bay and back through the Waiʻaleʻale crater with its waterfall walls.

The crater is the part weather closes first. If the pilot says it is socked in, the rest of the route still flies.
5

Back at the terminal

An hour of air time and the booking is done — most flights here have no ground component at all.

Photos taken through the door frame on a doors-off flight are the ones worth keeping; the doors-on shots will have reflections whatever you do.

What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home)

✓ Bring

  • Dark clothing — reflections in the window are the main photographic problem here
  • A light jacket for doors-off flights; it is cold and loud at altitude
  • Your booking voucher and photo ID
  • A tethered camera or a phone strap, mandatory on doors-off flights
  • Motion-sickness tablets if you are prone — the crater run is the turbulent part
  • Sunglasses, though they come off for photographs

✗ Leave behind

  • Hats, scarves and anything unsecured on doors-off flights
  • White or pale tops that mirror in the glass
  • Large bags — nothing loose comes into the cabin
  • Drones, which are restricted across the island's parks and coastline
  • Selfie sticks, banned by every operator here
Motion-sickness tip: The turbulence on Kauai is over the interior, not the coast. Take the first flight of the morning before the trade-wind cloud builds, and skip a heavy breakfast if the crater leg is on your route.

Where Flights Depart From

Heliport / BaseDetailsBest for
Lihue Airport Almost every flight on this page, including the doors-off options Anyone staying on the east or south shore
Princeville, north shore North-shore departures closer to the Na Pali cliffs Travellers based in Hanalei or Princeville
Lihue's tour terminals sit beside the main airport, twenty minutes from Poipu and forty-five from Princeville — build the drive into a 45-minute check-in rather than assuming the airfield is next door.

How to Choose a Helicopter Operator

What good operators do

  • State clearly whether the flight is doors-on or doors-off, and what the doors-off age and item rules are.
  • Fly four-seat aircraft or block middle seats when they advertise 'all window seats'.
  • Publish the weight threshold for a second seat before booking.
  • Reroute rather than cancel when the crater is closed, and say so in advance.
  • Refund weather cancellations in full and offer a same-week rebooking.

Red flags to avoid

  • 'All window seats' on a six-seat aircraft with no explanation of how that works.
  • No mention of the doors-off loose-item rules until the harness is being fitted.
  • Fares that omit the airport fee collected at the terminal.
  • Flights sold as landing at Manawaiopuna Falls when the listing describes a flyover.

What You Fly Over in Kauai

The landmarks and flight corridors these tours actually cross, and what each one looks like from the air.

The Na Pali coast

No road here

Twenty-five kilometres of cliffs up to a kilometre high on the northwest shore, with hanging valleys and sea caves. Reachable by boat, by an eleven-mile trail, or from the air.

💡 Morning light hits the cliffs; by mid-afternoon they are in their own shadow.

Waimea Canyon

Every route

Sixteen kilometres long and a kilometre deep, with red walls that the rim viewpoints only partly show. Aircraft fly inside it, which the road cannot.

💡 The canyon is on the dry western side and usually flies even when the interior is closed.

Mount Waiʻaleʻale crater

Weather dependent

The wettest place on the island and one of the wettest on earth, a horseshoe of walls carrying dozens of waterfalls at once when it is running.

💡 This is the leg the weather closes first. First flight of the day is the one that gets in.

Manawaiopuna Falls and Hanalei

Waterfall country

The 122-metre falls from the opening of Jurassic Park, and the taro fields and bay of the north shore beyond them.

💡 Landing at the falls is a separate, pricier product — most flights pass overhead.
